Email
Information
In this section we will review how to configure
the various email programs, how to remove the Happy99.exe
email virus, how you can check your email while
on the road, how you can fight spam, and what some of the Returned
Email messages mean.
Email
Configuration
Eagle.ca
has uses the standard POP3 and SMTP protocols for sending and receiving
E-Mail. Any e-mail client that supports these methods can be used with
eagle.
One
thing to keep in mind.... when connected to an outside domain you
can't send email through our system. It prevents our servers from being used
to send SPAM. You can leave your mail program set to eagle.ca for the POP
server (incoming) but you'll have to set the SMTP server (outgoing) to
whatever network you are connected with. The

Email Viruses
There are various e-mail related trojan or virus
programs that attach themselves to your email client and send copies of
itself to people in your contact list or automatically send a copy to
those that you email.
One such nasty program is the "Happy99.exe"
virus. If your friends are telling you that they received an email message
with just Happy99.exe as an attachment, you need to clean your computer
right away! You can download
this file which will do the job automatically for you. (file
available to those connected to the eagle network)
The "kak.worm" virus is also making
rounds. Here's a link that will download a program that will automatically detect if you have the
virus and remove it:

Returned Email Messages
If you send email to an invalid domain or username
the mail system will return your original message along with some
additional information describing why the message couldn't be delivered.
Once you understand a few basics these returned messages won't be as
confusing as you think.
"User Unknown"
A typical email address is in the form of username@domain.ext.
If your message makes it to the remote domain but their system doesn't
recognize the username, you will often see a returned message that looks
something like this:
The original message was received at Mon, 29 Nov 1999 18:38:08 -0500
(EST) from marlo.eagle.ca [209.167.16.10]

"Host Unknown"
The host would be the domain, or the right hand part of
the e-mail address after the "@" symbol. A typical response from
the mail system may look like this:
