Configuring Microsoft Internet Mail

Microsoft Internet Mail arrived with Internet Explorer version 3 and has been since replaced by Outlook Express. There has been one major "bug" in Internet Mail that you should be are aware of.... and that is it's ability to lose email that ends with two carriage return/line feed characters (basically, two blank lines). Microsoft never bothered to fix that problem because it dropped Internet Mail and switched over to Outlook Express. So be warned!

One reminder. Don't put a capital letter P before your username anywhere in your E-Mail configuration.

If this is your first time running Internet Mail the Wizard will automatically start and walk you through the setup.

If you wish to review your settings, then click on Mail > Options.

 The Send Tab

If you wish to set up your email program so you can write messages "off-line" then take a look at the check box in front of "Send Messages Immediately." Uncheck this option. This will allow you to write messages while offline. Otherwise, when you click on the "send" button after composing a new message, Internet Mail will attempt to deliver your message right away.

The Read Tab

To empty the trash folder each time you exit Internet Mail, check the option "Empty Messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit." This will prevent you from taking up disk space storing all of your deleted message in the Deleted Folder.

The Server Tab (this is the important one)

Enter your full name in the "Name" box.

Enter your complete email address, in the form of login_name@eagle.ca, in the "Email Address" box.

Enter mail.eagle.ca in the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)" Server box

Enter mail.eagle.ca in the "Incoming Mail (POP3)" Server box.

Enter your login_name in the "Pop3 Account" box.

Enter your password in the "Password" box.

Remember, your username and password are case sensitive so be sure to enter these items using lower case letters!

Now click on "Apply" and then "OK."

Return to the Email Configuration page.
