Windows
3.x Software Installation
The
Windows 3.x operating system is the only operating system where you must
install our software in order to get online with eagle.ca!
We use a
program called "Trumpet Winsock" which handles the TCP/IP
protocol needed to use the internet on your Windows 3.x based computer.
You can think of this program as your "dialer" since it's the
program that will make the modem call eagle and log you in, and when
you're done, it will disconnect on your command.
Our most
recent software package for Windows 3.x includes: Trumpet Winsock,
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0F with Internet Mail, FreeAgent, HTML
Writer and WS_Ftp.
How to
install from Floppy Disk
You
should have four disks, labeled "1 of 4", "2 of 4",
"3 of 4" and "4 of 4."
Place
"Disk 1" in your floppy disk drive. We are going to assume that
your A: drive is the 1.44M floppy drive on your computer. Your drive
designation may differ.
Using Program
Manager click on the File menu and then click on Run.
In the
dialog box which appears type A:\SETUP and
click on the OK button.
This
should start the installation program. If it doesn't be sure you have the
floppy disk in Drive A: and that you correctly entered the command A:\SETUP
-- remember that is the letter A, then a : (colon), then a \ (backslash),
followed by the word SETUP.
Now you
can skip to the next section.
How to
install from CD
Place
the eagleConnect CD into your CD-ROM Drive. We are going to assume that
your CD-Rom drive is drive D: on your computer. Your drive designation may
differ.
Using Program
Manager click on the File menu and then click on Run.
In the
dialog box which appears, type D:\EAGLE31 and click on the OK button.
This
should start the installation program. If it doesn't be sure you have the
floppy disk in Drive D: with the label up, and that you correctly entered
the command D:\EAGLE31 -- remember that is
the letter D, then a : (colon), then a \ (backslash), followed by the word
EAGLE31.
Now you
can skip to the next section.
How to
install from the Web
In order
to do this, you would require a working Internet connection and a working
browser. If you do, then why are you re-installing the software again?
This will break your current setup and cause you lots of grief! Therefore,
I'm going to skip this section because it will only get existing clients
in big trouble! If you need to update specific programs please go to our Software @ eagle
web site.
During the installation you will be prompted for a
variety of information. You will need to provide:
-your first and last name
-your login id or username
-the serial or com port your modem is connected to. You
will have to determine the com port of your modem. If you have no idea,
you can try port 1, 2, 3 or 4. You don't need to re-install the entire
software package to try a different port, just click on File and
then Setup inside of Trumpet Winsock and the change the field they
call "Slip Port"
-the speed you would like to use. Again, we assume that
you know the speed of your modem. If in doubt, start at the lowest speed
and keep increasing the baud rate until it breaks. Common modem speeds are
2400, 9600, 14400, 19200, 38400 and 57600. You don't need to re-install
the entire software package to try a different speed, just click on File
and then Setup inside of Trumpet Winsock and the change the field
they call "Baud Rate"
And now, just follow the on-screen instructions. At
the end of the EagleConnect installation, we launch the install program
for Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Their setup program will tell you that
a file called "setup.exe" already exists and will ask if you
want to replace it... choose Yes. Again, follow the on-screen
instructions.
You can keep all of your Internet Icons in the same
program group. When asked which program group you wish to have the
Internet Explorer icons placed in, click on Eagle Internet.
When the installation programs are all done, you
should now have a new program group called "Eagle Internet"
inside Program Manager. The next thing to do is enter your password into
Trumpet Winsock... double click the "Eagle Internet" program
group and then double click on "Trumpet Winsock"
From inside Trumpet Winsock, click on Dialer
and look for Setup.cmd (it'll be near the bottom of the pop-up window)-- click on Setup.cmd which will walk you
through four more questions.
1. The dial-up number for eagle should already be entered
for you. 373-4305 is the phone number to use for 33.6 or slower modems. If
you have a new 56K modem you should use 373-7260. If you have Call Waiting
on your phone line you will need to disable that feature while you're on
the Internet, so if necessary, please add *70, before the phone
number. Remember, that is four characters! A *, a 7, a 0, and a comma!
Click OK to go to the next question.
2. Your login name should already be in this box. Click OK
to go the next question.
3. Enter the password you were assigned when you signed up
in this box. You only have to do this once. Click OK to go to the next
question.
4. Next is the modem initialization string. You can accept
the default by clicking on OK.
And now you're ready to dial in and connect to
eagle!
