Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x

In this section, we're going to review how to set up some basic features of Internet Explorer 5, like setting the default start page, the default email program, default connection method, and clearing your disk cache.

Setting the Default Start Page

If you would like to configure your browser to automatically load your favourite web site each time you start browsing the web, you can do this one of two ways.

1) Click on Tools > Internet Options. At the top of the screen is a section titled "Home Page" and a while box labeled "Address" with a complete web url in the format of http://www.somesite.com

If, for example, you always want to start at canoe's web site, simply click in the Address box, delete the url, and enter http://www.canoe.ca/

Now click on Apply, then OK.

2) The other method is set the default start page while viewing the web site. In this manner, you would surf to the web site you want to always start at, and then click on Tools > Internet Options and click on the box labeled "Use Current" which will automatically copy the exact web url into the address box for you.

Now click on Apply, then OK.

Setting your Default Email Program

Microsoft Internet Explorer is bundled with a great email program called Outlook Express, but if you prefer to use a different email program, you may want to tell the browser the name of your email client so when you click on those "mailto" links on the web, you are using your favourite program instead of Outlook Express.

Click on Tools > Internet Options then the "Programs" tab.

Here you can select many defaults for different applications, including your default E-mail program. Just click on the down arrow at the right side of the e-mail box and select the name of your email client from the list.

If your email program doesn't appear in the list, it's because it isn't a mapi-compatible email program or you haven't turned on the mapi support in your email client.

Selecting your default connection method

When you load Internet Explorer, it attempts to fetch your default start page right away. You should tell Internet Explorer how you connect to the Internet. If you're using a modem, Internet Explorer can automatically make the connection for you. If you're using a LAN this would tell Internet Explorer not to bother using the modem.

Click on Tools > Internet Options and click on the Connections tab.

I have heard of different variations of this screen, but the basics are as follows:

You should see a large box labeled "Dial-up settings" that allows you to specify the Dial-Up Networking profile to use and  radio buttons below that to select whether to dial a connection at all.

If you're using a modem, you'll want to choose "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" or "Always dial my default connection" -- be sure to click on and select eagle.ca as your default connection profile.

If you're connected to a LAN that provides you with Internet access, then you will select "Never Dial a connection"

To use or not to use a Proxy Server? Eagle does NOT require you to enter anything into the Proxy Server settings. If your LAN connection requires you to enter something into the Proxy Server settings, then click on the button "LAN Settings" and complete the screen as needed.

Clearing your Cache

Although your Cache are maintained automatically by Internet Explorer on a first in/last out basis, there may be times when you wish to erase this information.

Click on Tools > Internet Options. There are three sections on this screen. The middle area is called "Temporary Internet files" and controls your hard disk cache settings.

If you click on the Settings button, you can decide how often the browser checks for newer versions of stored pages. I suggest leaving it on the default radio button "Automatically"

Next is a slider control that selects how much disk space to set aside for the cache. This is a personal preference and there really isn't a "right" or "wrong" setting. I'd suggest about 2% of your drive, or around 50 megabytes. Too large a cache can actually slow you down because it takes so long to search through the cache, while too small a cache keeps the browser working too much on clearing out the older data.

Click OK when you're done on this screen.

If you click on the "Delete Files" button, you will be prompted to confirm you wish to delete all files in the Temporary folder. Click on Yes and when it's finished click on OK.
