Personal
Home Pages
If you have purchased
the block of time plan, you will need to convert to a monthly plan or pay for
separate web hosting on our server. Please note that these instructions
apply to personal home pages only. If you are hosting a domain at eagle your
instructions will be slightly different.
There are also some helpful
tips at the bottom!
Uploading
your files to the eagle server using FTP
To
upload your files, you will be using an internet protocol named "FTP
- File Transfer Protocol." There are many "ftp" programs
available for use, and they all require the same basic information:
-an ftp
servername, ftp username, ftp password, and a remote directory.
On the
MacIntosh Operating System, you would use the "Fetch" program.
Think of
this FTP program as something very similar to Windows File Manager or
Windows Explorer. It's used to manage files on a remote server, and to
move files back and forth between your computer and the remove server.
The following
instructions assume you are using the WS-FTP program If you don't have this program,
you can find it on our software page.
If you are using different FTP software, the information provided below
shouldn't be much different but as usual... your mileage will vary! Remember,
the eagle Staff can't be expected to know the in's and out's of all FTP
programs.
Dial in and get connected to
eagle.ca
Load the
WS_FTP program. Let's create a profile that will connect you to the eagle
FTP server.
Click on
the "New" button.
You want
to select "Create a FTP site" and call it
"eagle.ca"
Click on
the Next button.
In the
"Host name or IP Address" box, you should see "eagle.ca"
Click on
the Next button.
In the User
ID box, enter your login name.
Do
not click "Anonymous Logon"
In the Password
box, enter your password.
Click
on Save Password if you don't want to enter your password each time
you use this profile.
Click on
the Finish button.
Now we
need to tell the WS_FTP program which directories to use on the Remote and
Local computers. Click on the Properties button, then click on the Startup
Tab.
In the Remote
Site Folder box enter: /home/your_login_name
You'll
have to decide what to enter in the Local Folder box. This would be
the path to your web documents on your computer's hard drive.
At best you can enter C:\ and browse your folders after you are
connected.
Leave the
rest of the settings on this screen alone.
Click on
the OK button.
You can
use this profile again later when you are updating files on your web site.
For now, just click on the OK button to log into our ftp server. If
everything doesn't go OK, please read carefully the messages in the lower
window. You can scroll back and read the information. Connection failures
are generally caused by invalid username and passwords. You can correct
the directories easily later as well too.
Create your public_html directory
The location of your
files on the eagle server is very important! The web server expects to
find your files in a subdirectory in your home directory named "public_html"
-- the first step is to create this directory.
WS_FTP creates two
windows on your screen. The left window displays files on your hard
drive. The right window displays files on the remote ftp server.
You need to verify
that on the right window, under "Remote Site" you see
"/home/your_login_name" (substituting
your login_name after the
word "home" naturally). As an example, if your email address was
demo@eagle.ca you would likely see
"/home/demo" in the Remote Site box.
To create this magical
directory, click on the MkDir button on the right side and enter
"public_html" in the
dialog box which appears. Notice how this is public, underscore, html
Now you need to change directories to your
public_html directory because this is where your files must be saved You can do this by double clicking on the
public_html folder which
now appears in the right window. Notice that the path displayed at the top under
Remote Site should have changed.
Transferring
Your Files
Make sure the "Local System"
directory in the left window contains your files for your web site. You need know
what directory on your computer your files are located
in. We can't help you on this one!
To transfer a file,
simply click on the filename in the window on the left side and then click on the arrow pointing
to the right (the arrow is
between the two boxes), or just double click the file.
Move all files over one by one or
tag several files and then click on the arrow pointing to the right.
Helpful
Tips
By default, if somebody
just enters "http://www.eagle.ca/~name"
the web server attempts to load the page "index.html" first,
and "index.htm" second. Directory "browsing" is disabled
for security reasons so it's a good idea to name your first page index.html
or index.htm.
Specific pages (or
files) in your directory can be
called up directly by adding the name of the file after your initial URL. For example, if
you put a file called page2.html into your directory and you want someone to get directly
to it, the URL is:
http://www.eagle.ca/~your_login_name/page2.html
Remember that when you transfer your files
you're now in the Unix world and Unix is case sensitive!! If your tag for a graphic
looks like img src="MYGRAPHIC.GIF" but the file was transferred up to our server
as "mygraphic.gif" your picture won't display. Edit your source to match the
case of the file.
