Windows
NT4 TCP/IP & Dial-up Networking
Configuring
Manually
To
connect to a regular dial-up Internet account using Windows
NT4 you need to create a profile in Dial-up Networking,
configure your TCP/IP protocol,
Creating
your Dial-Up Networking Profile
Double
click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double click on
Dial-Up Networking.
Click on
the New button to start the New Phonebook Entry Wizard.
Name the
new phonebook entry eagle.ca and click the Next button.
On the
next window, titled "Server" check the first two
options
Then
click the Next button.
The next
screen lets you enter the phone number to dial.
If you are using a
33.6 or slower modem, then you should enter 373-4305 in the phone
number box.
If you are using a
56K modem, then you should enter 373-7260 in the phone number
box.
If
you have Call Waiting enabled on your phone line, this is a good place to
enter a code that will disable that feature while you're on the Internet.
If you don't disable Call Waiting, in-coming calls will disconnect you, as
your modem will hang up because that little tone or beep interferes with
the modem's signal long enough that it thinks the connection has been
lost.
To disable Call
Waiting, just add *70, before the phone number. Remember, that is
four characters! * 7 0 , Don't forget the comma!
Click the Next
button.
The Wizard should
prompt you to click on the Finish button, and then you will be
taken back to the Dial-Up Networking window. We still have some
other settings to adjust before we're done.
Click on the More
button, and then click on "Edit Entry and Modem Properties".
Click on the Server
tab.
There are five check
boxes on this screen. The only box that should have a check mark in it is
the top one, TCP/IP.
Click on the TCP/IP
Settings button.
At the top of this
screen are two options "Server Assigned IP address" and
"Specify an IP address" -- you want to leave the dot on
the very top option "Sever Assigned IP address"
Below this, and near
the middle of the screen, are two more options "Server assigned
name server addresses" and "Specify name server addresses".
The first option is normally selected for you. Change this to the lower
option of the two, which is "Specify name server addresses"
Now we need to enter
eagle.ca's DNS IP number in the "Primary DNS" box. To do
this, click on the first 0 and delete it (use
either your backspace key or the delete key)
and then type 209 167 16 10. Please
note that this number ends in 10 (ten).
The next three boxes
should remain as 0's.
At the bottom are two
more check boxes. Uncheck "Use IP header compression" but
leave "Use default gateway on remote network" checked.
Click on the OK
button to close the TCP/IP Settings window.
Click on the Security
tab.
Make sure "Accept
any authentication including clear text" is selected.
Click on the OK
button.
You can try to
connect now by clicking on the Dial button. The next screen will
prompt you for your User name and Password. Enter your eagle
login name and password (remember
these are case sensitive)
and leave the Domain field empty!
If you don't wish to
constantly enter the password each time you dial, check the Save
Password option.
Click on OK to
make your call.
Configuring
the TCP/IP Protocol
If you're not
experiencing any difficulty surfing the net and sending email, I would
leave this section alone. However, if you're browser is having a hard time
locating web sites, then you can adjust the properties of your TCP/IP
protocol to help out.
Click on Start
> Settings > Control Panel and double click on the Network
icon.
This will bring up a
window called "Network" with five tabs across the
top.
Click on the Protocols
tab.
Click on TCP/IP
so it's highlighted and then click on the Properties button. This
will take you to a window titled "Microsoft TCP/IP Properties"
with four more tabs across the top.
Click on the DNS
tab.
There are 4 fields that need to be completed on this panel. Enter
your eagle login name in the Host Name field.
If you connect to eagle using Plogin_name then you
should enter Plogin_name in the Host Name Field. If you connect to
eagle using just your login_name, then enter your login_name without the
capital P here.
Click in the Domain box and enter eagle.ca
Click on the Add button below DNS Server Search Order
and enter 209 167 16 10.
If you are only connecting to eagle.ca and
you have other numbers in the DNS Server Search Order box, click on
the number and then click on the Remove button to the right until
only our number remains.
Click on the Add button below Domain Suffix Search
Order and enter eagle.ca.
If you are only connecting to eagle.ca and you
have other domains in the Domain Suffice Search Order box, click on
the domains and then click on the Remove button to the right until
only eagle.ca remains.
Click on the OK button to return to the Network
window.
Click on the OK button to close the Network window.
