EAGLE.CA - Customer Support Centre

Windows 95/98/ME TCP/IP & Dial-up Networking

To connect to a regular dial-up Internet account using Windows95,   Windows98 or Windows ME, you need to ensure you have Dial-up Networking turned on in Add/Remove Programs, you need to add three Network Protocols (Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP), and you need to create a Dial-up Networking profile. Naturally, you must also have a modem installed too!

As with everything, there is an easy_way (automated software) to do this, and a hard way! (complete all the steps by hand)

If all you want to do is review your settings then go here!

The EASY Way

How would you like to run a little program that does all the configuration for you? Over the years the eagle Support Staff have experimented with several utilities to make configuring your computer a snap! At last we finally found what we were looking for (as of September 1999).

You can get this handy program in one of three ways:

-download from the Web and install

-on a Floppy Disk

-on a CD-Rom

Downloading from the World Wide Web

In order to download our eagleconnect.exe file from the World Wide Web, you will need a computer that already has Internet access. I'm going to suggest you save the program to a floppy disk.

To start the download of this utility, just CLICK HERE!

Select the option "Save this program to Disk" and then click on the OK button. You'll then see the Save As.. window appear, which will allow you to select where you should store the setup program. I would click the down arrow in the Save In.. box, and choose 3 1/2 Floppy (A:), then click Save. Once the file is saved, click Close.

Now you can take the floppy to the computer you want to set-up and follow the instructions below.

Installing from Floppy Disk

You could come into our Cobourg office and pick up a copy of the configuration program on a 1.44M Floppy Disk. Starting the installation program is quite easy.

Place the diskette in your floppy disk drive. We are going to assume that your A: drive is the 1.44M floppy drive on your computer. Your drive designation may differ.

Click on your Start button and then click on Run.

In the dialog box which appears type A:\EAGLE (or if you've downloaded the program from the web, type in A:\EAGLECONNECT) and click on the OK button.

This should start the set-up program. If it doesn't be sure you have the floppy disk in Drive A: and that you correctly entered the command A:\EAGLE -- remember that is the letter A, then a : (colon), then a \ (backslash), followed by the word EAGLE. Or, if you've downloaded the utility program from the web, that will be A, then a : (colon), then a \ (backslash), followed by the word EAGLECONNECT.

If you have a copy of our older Floppy disk set (3 disks or less) then please DO NOT install them. The software is out of date and useless on today's computers. Also do NOT install our Windows 3.x Floppy disks onto a Windows 95/98/NT4 computer.

Now you can skip to the next section.

Installing from CD-ROM

Place the eagleConnect CD into your CD-ROM Drive. We are going to assume that your CD-Rom drive is drive D: on your computer. Your drive designation may differ.

If you have the "auto-run" feature enabled, Windows will automatically start the EagleConnect program. If it doesn't start on its own, then click on the Start button and click on Run

In the dialog box which appears, type D:\EAGLE and click on the OK button.

This should start the installation program. If it doesn't be sure you have the cd-rom disk in Drive D: with the label up, and that you correctly entered the command D:\EAGLE -- remember that is the letter D, then a : (colon), then a \ (backslash), followed by the word EAGLE.

If installing from the CD, you will be given the opportunity to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, Netscape 4.61, or use your existing web browser.

Now you can skip to the next section.

Running the Auto-Configure Program

This little program will ensure you have all the proper network protocols installed and configured, it will create your Dial-Up Networking profile and create an icon on the desktop for you, it will configure your email programs with correctly configured profiles and if you're using the eagleCD it will give you the choice of installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or Netscape 4.73 (at the time of this writing)

Best of all, it's easy! When you start the setup program  you will see a window titled "Welcome to Eagle.ca" with the license agreement showing. You may wish to read this agreement as it relates to the terms and conditions of your eagle account. Click on the Continue button to go to the next step or click on the Cancel button to abort the program.

Please Enter Your Login Name

Now the program will ask you to enter your login name. Please refer to your Eagle User Manual. Your "login name" is simply the left part of your email address, so if your email address at eagle is "demo@eagle.ca" then you would enter "demo" as your login name. Login names are 8 letters or less and are case sensitive so be sure to enter this using lowercase letters!

As of September 17, 1999, you are no longer required to enter the capital letter P before your login name, however both methods are supported and therefore "demo" or "Pdemo" will log you in using a PPP session. This particular program does however require just your username with NO capital P.

Once you have entered your login name click on the Next button.

Please Enter Your Password

Now the program will ask you for your password twice. Passwords are case sensitive so be sure to enter your password in all lowercase letters.

Click on the Next button when finished.

Please Enter Your Real Name

This is the name that will appear in any E-Mail messages you send out. It can be anything but normally this would be your first and last name, properly capitalized. i.e. John Doe.

Click on the Next button when finished.

Please Enter Your Organization

If you have a company name that you would like to see attached to your email or newsgroup postings, you can enter that here and click on Next, otherwise, just press Enter.

Please Select Number to Install

The default is ON, Cobourg 1-905-373-7260 (56K Modems) but if you have a 33.6 or lower modem, click on the down arrow and select ON, Cobourg 1-905-373-4305 (33.6 Modems) instead.

Click on the Next button when finished.

Now the eagle.exe program will search for the necessary components and if necessary, install the various modules as required.

WARNING: You may be asked to insert your original Windows Cd-Rom! Make sure you have your own copy and keep it nearby in case you need it!

When the installation is completed you will see a window titled "Eagle installation complete" - click on the OK button.

Adjusting your Modem's Speed

The last step is to make sure your modem's speed is set properly.

-Double click on My Computer

-Double click on Dial-Up Networking

-Right mouse click on the Eagle icon and left mouse click on Properties

-Click on the Configure button.

If you have a 56K, 33.6 or 28.8 modem, please change the modem speed from 115200 to 57600

If you have a 56K modem you may be thinking, "what? 57600? Why can't I leave it at 115200?" You can, if you want, but you'll find data actually transfers faster at 57600 because your computer is able to keep up to the data flow much better, resulting in fewer blocks of data being re-sent or completely lost. Think of your modem as a funnel and you're pouring water into the funnel which is falling into a large bottle.  You can choose to pour water into the funnel at a nice pace which falls into the large bottle below smoothly, or you can pour the water into the funnel so fast it overflows and spills down the sides. That's the basic difference between selecting 115200 and 57600. Feel free to experiment if you want. Perhaps you have a speedy computer that can keep up with the faster data transfer speeds, perhaps you don't.

-Click on the OK button.

-Click on the next OK button.

-Close the Dial-Up Networking Window.

-Close the My Computer Window.

-Make sure your computer is configured for 10-digit dialing!
