Microsoft
Internet Explorer 3.x
In this section, we're going to review how to set up
some basic features of Internet Explorer 3, like setting the default
start page, the default email program, default
connection method, and clearing your disk
cache.
Setting the Default Start
Page
If you would like to configure your browser to
automatically load your favourite web site each time you start browsing
the web, you can do this one of two ways.
1) Click on View > Options and then
click on the "Navigation" tab. At
the top of the screen you have to select "Start Page"
(you can also select Search Page and the Quick Links from 1-5).
If, for example, you always want to start at canoe's
web site, simply click in the Address box, delete the url, and enter http://www.canoe.ca/
Now click on Apply, then OK.
2) The other method is set the default start page while
viewing the web site. In this manner, you would surf to the web site you
want to always start at, and then click on View > Options
and then click on the "Navigation" tab. At the top of the
screen you have to select "Start Page" and click on the
button labeled "Use Current"
which will automatically copy the exact web url into the address box for
you.
Now click on Apply, then OK.
Setting your Default
Email Program
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 is bundled with a now
unsupported email
program called Internet Mail, but if you prefer to use a different email
program, you may want to tell the browser the name of your email client so
when you click on those "mailto" links on the web, you are using
your favourite program instead of Internet Mail.
Click on View > Options
then the "Programs" tab.
Here you can select the default programs for your
mail and news. Just click on the
down arrow at the right side of the e-mail box and select the name of your
email client from the list.
If your email program doesn't appear in the list,
it's because it isn't a mapi-compatible email program or you haven't
turned on the mapi support in your email client.
Selecting your
default connection method
When you load Internet Explorer, it attempts to
fetch your default start page right away. You should tell Internet
Explorer how you connect to the Internet. If you're using a modem,
Internet Explorer can automatically make the connection for you. If you're
using a LAN this would tell Internet Explorer not to bother using the
modem.
Click on View > Options
and click on the Connections tab.
If you're using a modem, you'll want to
select the radio button beside the option "Connect to the Internet
as needed" and select Eagle.ca in the drop-down list "Use
the following Dial-Up Networking Connection"
If you're connected to a LAN that provides
you with Internet access, then simply leave "Connect to the
Internet as needed" un-checked.
To use or not to use a Proxy Server? Eagle
does NOT require you to enter anything into the Proxy Server settings. If
your LAN connection requires you to enter something into the Proxy Server
settings, then click on the "Settings" button and complete
the screen as needed.
Clearing your Cache
Although your Cache are maintained automatically by
Internet Explorer on a first in/last out basis, there may be times when
you wish to erase this information.
Click on View > Options and then
click on the "Advanced" tab. Located in the middle is a
section called "Temporary
Internet files."
If you click on the Settings button, you can
decide how often the browser checks for newer versions of stored pages. I
suggest leaving it on the default radio button "Every time you
start Internet Explorer"
Next is a slider control that selects how much disk
space to set aside for the cache. This is a personal preference and there
really isn't a "right" or "wrong" setting. I'd suggest
about 2% of your drive, or around 50 megabytes. Too large a cache can
actually slow you down because it takes so long to search through the
cache, while too small a cache keeps the browser working too much on
clearing out the older data.
If you click on the "Empty Folder"
button, you will be prompted to confirm you wish to delete all files in
the Temporary folder. Click on Yes and when it's finished click on OK.

page.
